Gondola construction is a well-respected trade not only in Venice but throughout the world for the delicate balance of various wood types, and the precision of design. There are only five workshops that still exist in Venice today carrying on this tradition, and the 120-year-old Tramontin workshop is among them, producing an average of only two or three gondolas each year (it takes several months to produce just one). Guided visits can be arranged Mon-Fri for Euro 55 for a group and on Saturday and Sunday for Euro 140 (tack on an additional Euro 55 if you need an English interpreter); Roberto Tramontin explains a bit about the gondola’s history, various phases of construction and the ypes of wood used.
